Why Is She Here?

(Mikkel)

Serenity sat at her desk as she applied makeup to her neck. Her eyebrows furrowed, staring at herself in the little pink compact mirror she was holding. I debated whether I should go into her office since we were at work. I wanted nothing more than to kiss her and tell her how much I missed her, but I knew it was inappropriate right now.

Gaining the courage, I grabbed some random papers and walked to her door. At least I’d make it look like it was school-related.

“It’s been a while, Miss Ashton,” I said, disregarding the fact that she was married. If it was up to me, I’d never use that man’s last name. He didn’t deserve someone like Serenity.

“What are you doing here?” Her body shook from fear. The makeup brush and mirror she was holding dropped onto the desk.

“Relax, it’s just me. You look like you’ve seen a ghost,” I chuckled.

“I’m sorry. I guess you scared me,” she looked away, focusing on anywhere but me.

“Is everything okay? It seems like you’ve been avoiding me lately,” I leaned against the wall and studied her.

Since the weekend of the party, I haven’t spoken to Serenity. She wouldn’t answer my calls or text messages. I would have gone to her house to check on her, but that would have caused issues. When I did see her on campus, she would walk in the opposite direction once she saw me. I worried that she regretted that night between us.

“Yeah, I’ve been busy. Did you need anything? I have a lot of work to do,” she said.

“Serenity, what’s going on? You’re not acting like yourself.” I didn’t expect her to jump for joy when she saw me, but I didn’t expect her to be uninterested. A little smile would have been nice.

“Mr. Pierce, I always catch you here,” Dominic walked in and slapped his hand on my back. I narrowed my eyes at the back of his head as he walked over to Serenity. Once he stood next to her, he placed his hand on her shoulder and bent down to kiss her.

“Seems so,” I said, gritting my teeth.

“Oh, tell Andrea that I’m grateful for her squeezing me in her schedule the other day. I know she was busy, but she was able to see me for a fitting. Your girlfriend is lovely,” his lips spread into a smirk.

Somehow, that seemed like an underlying message. The way my body lit on fire whenever this man was around me was infuriating. I didn’t like how angry I became whenever he was near me.

“We’re no longer together, so I can’t relay that message. You’ll have to tell her yourself,” my tone may have been a little rude, but I wasn’t fond of this man. Why would I? He was married to the woman that I wanted. He treated her poorly, which angered me more.

“Really? What a shame. What did you do to lose her?” He laughed.

“Neither of us did anything. We separated because that’s what was best for us.
